From Santiago’s airport to Valparaíso

Valparaíso is about 120 km away from Santiago. Depending on traffic conditions, going from Santiago’s airport to Valparaíso takes 1 hour and fifteen minutes by taxi and about 2 hours by bus.

By bus
It is necessary to go first from the airport to Pajaritos metro/bus station (route), and then from Pajaritos to Valparaíso (route).

At the airport, buses headed to Pajaritos run from gate 5 every ten minutes or so. Various companies offer this service, and prices are similar (about 1,800 $CLP one-way ticket). You can pay the ticket directly in the bus and it will take you about 20 minutes to get to Pajaritos.

Pajaritos bus station is rather small and tickets to Valparaíso can be purchased at the offices of the various companies offering the service. Prices vary according to time and demand, ranging from 3,000 to 7,500 $CLP. Buses run regularly every 15 to 20 minutes and take about one and a half hours to get to Valparaíso. Consider that buses from Pajaritos to Valparíso run from 6:00 to 22:50. Outside this time window you should consider taking a taxi at the airport and go directly to Valparaíso.

IBC, where LADC 2025 will be hosted, is few blocks away from Valparaíso bus station (route).

From Valparaíso to UNAB in Viña del Mar

To get from IBC/PUCV in Valparaíso to UNAB in Viña del Mar, you have some options: driving, taking taxi apps a public bus.

Driving Instructions

The most direct route by car is approximately 9.5 km and takes about 20-25 minutes, depending on traffic. The main road for this journey is Avenida España.

Taxi apps

In Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, you have several options for ride-sharing and taxi apps. The most popular ones are Uber, and Cabify.

  • Uber y DIDI: Widely available and often used in both cities. You can use the app to request a ride, and sometimes you may be matched with a licensed taxi driver. Uber offers upfront pricing, and you can pay with a credit card or cash.
  • Cabify: This app is also very popular in Chile. It has a reputation for being a premium service with professional drivers, but also offers standard and taxi options. Cabify provides upfront pricing and allows for payment via card or cash.

Public Bus Instructions

Taking a bus, colloquially called “micros,” is a very common and affordable way to travel between Valparaíso and Viña del Mar.

Bus Routes & Stops

Several bus lines operate between the cities, including lines 207, 212, 213 and 214. You can catch these buses from various stops within Valparaíso. They will take you to Viña del Mar, and the UNAB campus is located on Quillota 980, which is along the route for these buses.

Timetable

The local bus system runs with very high frequency. Buses typically operate from early in the morning until late at night, with a bus passing approximately every 5 to 15 minutes. There isn’t a fixed schedule you need to consult, as they are a frequent service.

Ticket Price & Purchase

The fare for an intercity trip (between Valparaíso and Viña del Mar) is typically between CLP590 (about $0.50 to $0.70 USD).

You must pay the fare in cash directly to the bus driver when you board the bus. It’s recommended to have small bills or coins, as drivers may not have change for large denominations.

In public transportation, Redcompra, credit cards, and bank transfers are not accepted.
